Counselling
Grounded in evidence-based practice, I offer a person-centred approach to counselling which values my clients as distinct individuals, yet understands their placement in a system of relationships, resources and life experiences.

I view the mind-body as a single complex system which requires attentive exploration when investigating signs of imbalance, dysfunction or distress. Although most of our work will involve talking, my approach draws upon a mind-body perspective that includes practices to assist with embodiment and presence, connecting with the body as an anchor and ultimately learning to relate to it as a place of safety in daily life. To me, this is central in resolving trauma, aiding psychological growth, and promoting holistic wellbeing.

I value gentle and honest exploration of problematic dynamics affecting my clients’ lives and provide support with emotional integration of painful experiences, intentional action where change is needed, and mature acceptance when agency is limited.

I never pose as the expert on someone’s life, nor come from a place of judgement. Rather, I work collaboratively, offering insight and guidance where appropriate to help each person arrive at answers, solutions and practices that feel resonant and helpful to their lives.

Please note: As a Registered Psychological Counsellor, I do not work with psychopathology or serious mental illness. It is outside my scope of practice to provide clinical diagnoses for mental health conditions. However, I may work with individuals who have an existing diagnosis of a mild to moderate condition. Generally, I find it contrary to good therapeutic outcomes when diagnostic labels become internalised as a core part of an individual’s identity instead of a tool to aid treatment.

Mindfulness Training
I offer a structured introductory programme to learning mindfulness meditation.

This practical 6-week programme offers one-on-one tuition in understanding the basic theoretical framework and practices of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) – a well-researched and highly effective approach to stress management and wellbeing.
The aim of the programme is to resource individuals with an increased capacity to respond effectively to stressful life events, along with the knowledge and experience required to develop and maintain a long-term meditation practice (and to reap the rewards that come from that).
You can read more about the benefits of mindfulness here: https://jonkabat-zinn.com/

The programme runs for 6 consecutive weeks and requires an upfront commitment to attending all six individual 60-90 minute sessions, engaging in weekly homework practice, and attending an all-day retreat with other participants once the programme is completed. Each session will cover a reflective and theoretical component along with practical engagement with various mindfulness practices.
If you are interested, please make contact to set up an intake interview so we can determine whether this programme is right for you at this point in time.

My Practice Space
All counselling and mindfulness sessions are offered from a calm and welcoming therapy space in my home in Newlands, Cape Town. There is convenient street parking available. The address will be sent once an appointment is confirmed.

The Therapy Room

Please note: There are two, small, female dogs on the property that are very excited and friendly when people arrive. If this is an issue for you, please let me know beforehand so I can ensure they are shut away.
